How to Know if God is Speaking to You

We stole a glance at one another and silently giggled because we knew what the other one was thinking. As our eyes connected we shared a smile and an understanding that spoke volumes without any words uttered. It never gets old and we will never tire of it. He had done it again.  He was reminding us that He cares about every detail of our lives.

When my husband and I shared a peek at one another during the sermon when the pastor’s words were repeating something from the night before at Connection Group, others may have interpreted this exchange as a disruption and that we weren’t paying attention to the sermon. But it wasn’t that. It was an affirmation to one another that we will never cease to be amazed at how God uses all these ways to speak to us. To draw us closer to Him. Even using tragic situations to touch so many lives and bring Glory to Him. As I’ve said before, isn’t it so like God to use a sermon to speak to so many hearts in the same-same, but different way?

Prayer. Jesus. The Voice of God. Three different subjects. Yet the same. Three different settings. Yet the same. My daughter use to say, “same-same, but different.” That’s exactly what I mean. If you’ve spent any time with me at all, you’ll find I often talk about how God weaves my week together with the same message. All from different sources. Same message, same God - different day.

Even though we were having a discussion in our Connection Group about prayer and the sermon was titled “Hearing God,” it was just like our sweet Heavenly Father to connect these subjects in only the way He can. During our Connection Group discussion, it came up about how God used many different situations in our week prior to speak the same message into our hearts. Prayer is the single most important aspect of a Christian’s life. It’s like what food and water is to our human bodies. Prayer is how we communicate with the lover of our souls. He uses it along with so many other ways to speak to us. As usual, I have many notes from the sermon this past Sunday. And yes, doodles too 😊 There are a couple things that stuck out for me about the subject of Hearing God.

How to Know if God is Speaking to You.

1. God speaks clearly.

Simple, right? If God’s speaking – He speaks clearly.

It really is that simple. We make it so difficult. I hear people say all the time, “I don’t know what God’s saying.” Well, probably because He hasn’t spoken yet. Because when He speaks, He speaks clearly.

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. John 10:27

Call to me and I will answer you, and will tell you great and hidden things that you have not known. Jeremiah 33:3

How to Know if God is Speaking to You. The Lord establishes their steps. Proverbs 16:9

2. God will change the direction we're heading & He will not allow you to go the wrong way for very long.

I don’t know about you, but I need reminded of this. Thank God! He won’t allow us to be on the wrong track for long. Yes, I do believe He will for a season, but He has a purpose in allowing it. And the beauty He’ll bring from it is always worth it.

In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps. Proverbs 16:9

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye. Psalm 32:8

3. He will ask you what sin in your life needs identified?

He already knows the answer, but he wants us to examine our hearts and admit our sin. We all struggle with something. We won’t be perfect until we meet Jesus in Heaven, but we can grow and mature and become more like Him every day.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9

Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Psalm 139:3

4. God will ALWAYS confirm in His word what He's saying to you.

God will not speak anything to you that He doesn’t confirm in the Bible. You can be completely sure about that. If you’re getting advise from people, filter it through the Word of God.

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. Psalm 119:105

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 1 Timothy 3:16-17

One last thing I want to share that was encouraged of  us Sunday. If you memorize one verse, try this one:

Philippians 3:10

Here’s a few different versions I like.

I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection…NIV

My goal is to know Him and the power of His resurrection…HCSB

And this, so that I may know Him [experientially, becoming more thoroughly acquainted with Him, understanding the remarkable wonders of His Person more completely] and [in that same way experience] the power of His resurrection [which overflows and is active in believers]…AMP

The more and more we communicate with our Savior the more we recognize His voice. The more in tune with Him we are. The better we get at praying constantly and knowing Him.
