How to Know God's Will for Your Life
Love God. Love people.
The secret to the Christian life, and God's will for your life, summed up in four simple words. You may be thinking, "simple? yeah right!" But He really did give us the power to live our lives this way. When we believed and received the gift of salvation and the forgiveness of our sins we received the Holy Spirit. Because He lives in us, we have the power "to live according to God's Word... [the Holy Spirit] gives us the strength to walk rightly before God." - (The Gospel Project Volume 7). It bears repeating. The Christian life can easily be summed up in four simple words.Love God. Love people. Right? Right!
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. - John 14:26
How the Holy Spirit Helps us know god's will for our life
It's the Holy Spirit that helps us understand when things don't always go the way we think they should. It's the Holy Spirit that helps us love people who don't always do or treat us the way we think they should. It's the Holy Spirit that helps us love God when we are tempted to think only of ourselves.
Have you ever been faced with a situation that you had no warning about?
Of course, you have. You're breathing, aren't you? Then yes, you have. We all have. In fact, you can count on it as long as you continue to breathe. What about an unexpected delay in your schedule or your plans? What about a U-turn or a completely different path than what you had in mind? He already saw it coming. We may cry out to God for understanding and for clarification. And sometimes He'll clear the picture up for us. But sometimes He doesn't right away. Sometimes, we just need to trust.
Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. - Psalm 139:16
I believe we receive the Holy Spirit immediately when we surrender our lives to Jesus Christ.
With that said, I believe it takes time to grow into being in tune with Him. To train ourselves into listening to His small still voice. We must form the habit of paying attention. To recognize His voice. How many times have you had a conversation with someone complaining that you just wish God would write His answer on the wall. While we may never actually see the hand of God write something on the wall for us, I believe we can know His answer. I believe we can be in tune with Him. I believe we can abide in Him constantly throughout our day. But sadly, we don't. Most of us don't even have a "prayer life." I mean a real prayer life. Where you talk to God so much that you don't ever not recognize His voice. You are so close to Him that you feel His breath on your neck. I mean that kind of closeness. That kind of connection.
We love Him because He first loved us. - 1 John 4:19
I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be my people. - Leviticus 26:12
I believe He wants this kind of relationship with us.
I believe He longs for it. I believe that's why He gave His Holy Spirit to us. So, we don't ever have to be separated from Him. We don't have to be alone. We long for it too, but we try to substitute all kinds of things and people to satisfy that deep longing. If we'd channel that in the right place oh the things we could be doing for God. Oh the love He could spread through us. Imagine a world where we loved God and loved people. Sounds like Heaven, doesn't it?
God our Savior . . . desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
- 1 Timothy 2:3-4
The following verse is one of my all time favorites. It's a promise that nothing, absolutely nothing can separate us from the love of Christ. Sigh. (Insert heart-eyed emoji). Oh how I love Jesus!
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. - Romans 8:35-39
