How to Give it all to Get in Front of Jesus
Desperate. Desperate people are a little scary, aren’t they? They’re certainly not the type of people we’re attracted to. In fact, people who are desperate probably have a “look” about them. No doubt, desperate people draw attention to themselves. Not because they want the attention but because they are so focused on what they’re after they don’t even realize there are people watching. Many of us Christians don’t like ruffled feathers or any kind of boat rocking. We like for everything to stay nice and neat. Proper. You know? In fact, I’d venture to say we become desperate in our pursuit of smooth waters. Making sure there’s no attention drawn to us. Because if no one’s paying attention everything must be okay? It’s all good. Right?
Guilty. I certainly don’t like attention drawn to myself. I don’t want to be the center of attention…ever. Yet, I want to be so focused on Jesus, so desperate for Him that I don’t notice whether I’m being judged or not. I don’t notice the skeptic. I don’t notice those that are trying to keep me from Him.
Desperate means making a final, ultimate effort; giving all, involving or employing extreme measures in an attempt to escape defeat. Involving extreme danger or possible disaster. Extreme intensity. Outrageous. Shocking.
With this definition of desperate in mind let’s look at the story where Jesus heals and forgives the paralyzed man in the second chapter of Mark. Specifically verse two. “So many people gathered together that there was no more room…” Mark 2:2
These people were bringing a paralyzed friend to Jesus. They couldn’t get to him the “normal” way…through the door. But that didn’t stop them. They climbed up on the roof and went in that way! Craziness to us. Craziness to everyone there, I’d guess. Imagine. They were so desperate that they carried this friend up onto the roof and then dug through it in order to get in front of Jesus. Have you ever expressed such faith? These people weren’t even doing it for themselves, they were doing it for a friend. Wow. Oh Lord, I want to be this kind of person. This kind of friend.
How do we give it all to get in front of Jesus?
Put Jesus first
Is He on your mind first thing in the morning? Do you put Him before everything and everyone else? Are you renewing your mind everyday with the Word of God?
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." Romans 12:2
Call out to Jesus
How often do you pray? Only when troubles come? Constantly? Seeking Him day and night?
“And call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.” Psalm 50:15
"but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night." Psalm 1:2
Seek Jesus with every fiber of your being
Be serious. Commit to be purposeful and determined as you sincerely seek Him.
“You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you.” Psalm 63:1
“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” Hebrews 11:6
I have to admit, seeking Jesus desperately and not caring what others think is a challenge for me. I'm certainly not a fan of making a fool of ourselves, that's not what I'm trying to convey here. What I am trying to covey is that we get to Him in whatever way we can. Not letting the obstacles cause us to turn back or give up. Realizing that the front door isn't the only way to get to Him. That we think like this paralyzed man's friends thought...the door isn't the only way to get to Jesus!
