Waiting for God

We've just embarked on a young adult small group and are very excited to see what God has in store for all of us. We're beginning a study on the subject of waiting for God. Have you ever found yourself waiting for God? It can be a tough spot to be in. Especially if you're the wrestling type. Or if you're like me & you tend to want to fix things yourself. As if we can answer our own prayers, ha! How absurd! Trying to figure things out on our own. Going over and over again in our minds trying to figure out if this thing we're waiting on is a "God thing" or a "me thing." Driving yourself, and probably others, crazy. Whenever I've found myself having spent an embarrassing amount of time consumed with well, me-myself-&-I...it's a bit startling. In fact, it's enough to make me feel a little insane.  What's the answer to actually being productive in our waiting? To staying sane?

Here's what I think are the answers to those questions. Trusting Him. That's the answer to waiting. I'm here to tell you that I believe He's willing to reveal that to us if we choose to rest in Him. If we choose to surrender being consumed with this waiting time. Letting it paralyze us. Instead we turn the waiting into an attitude of trust.

"Worship is an act of surrender."

This requires a change of focus. What if when we're waiting we would worship? Our sermon series has been on the subject of Worship. I wrote in my notes that "Worship is an act of surrender." What if we began focusing on  letting Him transform us? I know that it's been my experience when I focus on Him instead of me, that the waiting doesn't feel so painful. It doesn't have me by the throat anymore. And I'm no longer confused because I now have an attitude of trust. I have surrendered the outcome to God. I was reminded again this past Sunday that "God is actively involved in the most intimate details of [my] life." (From The Gospel Project). That bears repeating. Slowly.

God...is...actively...involved...in...the...most...intimate...details...of...life.

Say it out loud, if that helps.

As I let this truth sink in. I'm once again amazed at His perfect love. For me. For you. Why would the details of my life be important to God? Why doesn't He have better things to do with His time?

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. Psalm 139:13

I see God as literally (because I know of no other ay to look at things) using His hands...

I don't know about you, but this verse tells me that God absolutely cares about the intimate details of you & me. I see God as literally (because I know of no other way to look at things) using His hands to place every cell, hair, dimple, color, freckle & all my quirky unique personality traits into shaping me into His favorite Michelle. Literally one of a kind. Literally. Like someone does with a set of knitting needles. Or a lump of clay. Or a blank canvas and paintbrush. Or a piece of wood and a saw. Imagine it however it helps you to get the idea way down deep in your soul. The point is that the artist got their hands involved intimately with  their creation and there will never be anything exactly like it. If we can just get a grasp on this, I believe we wouldn't spend our waiting time worried about anything.

Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord. Psalm 27:14

Isaiah chapter 40 is a good place to get a grasp on the idea of God being so much bigger than our waiting. A picture of the God who comforts. The God of new beginnings. I'm especially fond of the last verse....

but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

There's no reason for us to feel alone when we're waiting. Or to feel like God doesn't have anything to say. He has plenty to say. You just have to listen. He has promised to always be with us. Quiet your soul. Listen. He wants to talk with you. When you're ready. To surrender. To trust. To worship.
