I love words. I've referred to myself as a word nerd as well as a font nerd, even an art nerd. Guess I'm just a nerd all the way 'round :) I pay pretty close attention to words even to the point of recognizing a font that was used in a movie's credits. Yep, I'm not just a nerd, but I'm weird too! LOL. If you've been reading any of my writings you probably already know I'm constantly looking up meanings of words & their synonyms to better understand or covey what I'm trying to communicate. And when I'm studying God's Word I tend to need to dig deeper on specific words so I can get what's really being said to me specifically. I've even shared my love of looking up the meaning of someone's name. I think it really helps me to understand them a little better. It never ceases to amaze me how people's names are so spot on!
One of my favorite words is Serendipity. While this word isn't found in the Bible I still believe it's a good word. Although I don’t believe that anything in my life is an accident... I prefer to call it destiny or more plainly, God’s will. I’m a true believer that “my steps are directed by God” (see Proverbs 20:24). There’s just something about serendipity, there’s just something about trusting God in my everyday happenings. I’m not so shallow to think that I can just go about my merry way & whatever happens, happens. I do believe that the choices we make every second of everyday have consequences & because of those choices, life happens. Changes occur, whether we want them to or not. The seasons change no matter how badly we want summer to stick around just a little longer. We are growing older no matter how youthful we dress. And technology, well that’s moving at the speed of light.
Just as much as change is a part of our daily lives so are relationships. There are so many changes, challenges, rewards & yes, serendipity involved in relationships. It’s as important as food & shelter in our daily survival. It's the time of year where we're being reminded how blessed we are. It's the time of year we are reminded that we have much to be thankful for. None of our relationships are perfect, but I certainly believe God placed us in the families we're in. It wasn't an accident. Your name isn't an accident. You aren't an accident.
Serendipity means a "fortunate happenstance" or "pleasant surprise". Aren't you just so glad our Jesus likes to pleasantly surprise us? I bet you can think of a story right now where you were pleasantly surprised by the outcome of a situation. One that looked so bleak. That only God could orchestrate the outcome? He absolutely cares about the details of our lives.
Here's a few of my favorite verses that kinda speak to this.....
Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them. Psalm 139:16
“Man who is born of a woman is few of days and full of trouble. He comes out like a flower and withers; he flees like a shadow and continues not. And do you open your eyes on such a one and bring me into judgment with you? Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? There is not one. Since his days are determined, and the number of his months is with you, and you have appointed his limits that he cannot pass, ...Job 4:1-6
When man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of man were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is flesh: his days shall be 120 years.” The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown. The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. ...Genesis 6
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows. Matthew 10:29
May you focus on the blessings and have a wonderful day of Thanksgiving, no matter who you get to share it with!
